Month 4: Creative Process

What is the creative process?

“The creative process is a process of surrender, not control.” -Julia Cameron

The creative process manifests a bit differently for everyone, however, it follows a general framework.

  1. Inspiration

  2. Processing

  3. Idea Formulates

  4. Evaluation

  5. Action

The action or creating phase often sparks a new idea and the process starts again! We often work through the above steps subconsciously. We are not always aware of the process. Each step of the process may even look different for each person. For instance one person may derive inspiration from nature while another is inspired by a visit to a local gallery. We may formulate an idea instantly or we may ruminate on an inspiration for a while before an idea comes. The evaluation phase may cause us to pause, it may even cause fear. “Am I really capable of creating my idea?” This fear can be paralyzing, but pushing yourself on to the next stage is imperative. It is in the doing stage that your creativity grows and expands. Your confidence blooms with each creative activity.

Reflect on your personal creative process.

Use your own personal process as a way to get to know yourself a little better. Do you need to schedule time to create or do you work best when you can be more spontaneous? Do you need time to get messy and warm up with creative exercises or do you prefer to jump right into a project? Learn what works best for you.

Process art is for everyone!

Process art focuses on the “doing” aspect of creating. This type of art is for everyone. You do not need any predetermined skill or ability. All you need is an openness to explore, the ability to play, and a curiosity to guide you. The process of creating is a gift that all humans possess. It is our birthright!

Month 4 Prompts

Art-Break

his month we are focusing on your creative mood. We will start by creating a torn paper collage in whatever color represents your current mood. Tearing paper quite cathartic. I encourage you to slow down and really tune into your senses as you work! I chose the color blue for my piece, as I have been particularly drawn to that color recently. Blue is a cool, calm color. It often represents the imagination and intuition.

Reflection

Reflect on your mood, and your relationship with the color you chose. Does it relate to your creativity? What helps put you into a creative mood?
